Validate Strings

To validate strings prior to using them as inputs to a function, or to run validation after being prompted by a function that has detected invalid data, select Strings | Edit Tools | Validate String. Alternatively, click the Validate String tool on the String Editor Tools toolbar.

Validation Options

When polygons and strings are generated by other processes, self-intersections, multi-line intersections, and retraced points may occur due to defects or kinks in strings which cannot immediately be detected and resolved. To identify those problems in Vizex, select a suitable highlight colour.

Problem Description
Duplicate Points Duplicate points (points that occur in the same place) can be digitised inadvertently using a double-click or with snapping on.
To highlight the location of duplicate points, a larger, bolder point symbol is shown.
Backtracking segments It is possible to inadvertently backtrack along the path along a string (for example, a string that contains points ABCDE is digitised as ABCBCDE) when you are using the Follow tool to follow a string which has closely spaced points.
Backtracking segments may sometimes be valid. You can limit the validation to those backtracking strings with an internal angle less than a specified value.
Self-intersections Check for self-intersections in Plan view or in the current view direction.
Multi-line intersections Check for multi-line intersections in Plan view or in the current view direction.
Multi-line intersections may sometimes be valid. You can limit the validation to those intersections with a 3D separation less than a specified distance.

To eradicate duplicate points, retraced backtracking segments, self-intersections and multi-line intersections, select Strings | Utilities | Condition String.
