Colour Sets for Decomposition

The histogram decomposition function allows you to create a colour set based on breaks on a probability plot or histogram display. Such breaks may define a high likelihood that data is from a particular population, or may simply represent significant changes in the data - from a background data set to anomalous data set, for example.

Using a colour set produced in the histogram display and using that colour set to control the colours of data in other displays will help you detect anomalous data concentrations.

To create a colour set:

  1. Click the Colour Set button on the Decomposition form.
  2. The ranges shown in the Edit Colour Sets (Numeric) form are calculated by the Decomposition function and represent the break points on the underlying chart. By default, the colours for each range correspond to the population colours you have set on the Analysis tab of the Histogram form.
  3. Click Save As to save the Decomposition form set under an appropriate name.
  4. Click Close to return to the Decomposition form.

The colour set can then be used to colour code data in any of the displays. The resulting colour scheme will enable you to examine any spatial differences between different parts of the data range.
